I recently wanted to install Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex under Windows 7 (using Wubi) but I quickly got to an end. Well, in Windows 7 you can not install Ubuntu via Wubi the way you do in Windows XP or Vista. If you do so, everything will go fine but when you'll get to the booting menu you will be unable to find your Ubuntu installation.

In order to see Ubuntu in your boot menu you will need to run Wubi in compatibility mode (Run as: Windows Vista):

1) Right-click on wubi.exe and select Properties

2) Go to Compatibility tab and check "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select Windows Vista from the drop-down list.

3) Press Apply and Ok.
4) Run Wubi and continue the installation as usually.

NOTE: For a guide on how to install Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex using Wubi in Windows please go to our tutorial.

If you don't want to reinstall you can always just add Wubi to the Windows 7 boot list using EasyBCD, a GUI for the Windows 7 command line boot tool.

I've actually just installed Ubuntu (using wubi) on my Advent netbook running Windows7 RC. and it all worked fine.
Had to reinstall after the first install wouldn't accept my login details but the reinstall sorted out any problems..

Hi, i have a problem. I'v tried to install Kubuntu 9.4 from its live cd using Wubi in W7, but aftre setting installing the uninstaller the install stops. I downloaded wubi separately and tried it with an ISO file. In both cases I set the compatibility mode to Vista, and tried running wubi as admin and normal user to. Always stops after installing the uninstaller. What could be the problem?

I don't know what to say, it looks like you have some problems with your Windows installation

That's bad because the intallation is completely new with formated disc and everithing (not an upgrade of Vista). The error I get is :"writelines() argument must be a sequence of strings"

Just a guess... But be sure you're installing under same base language than Vista or 7 is; if i'm not wrong, same thing happened to me trying to install Ubuntu - Spanish version under Vista - English. Good luck.

btw, the tutorial link doesn't end up with anything remotely resembling an ubuntu tutorial
