7 reasons you should download a copy of Ubuntu now!

This article is for those of you who want to move to linux but didn't make the move yet. Here I will post the key things that might make you go and download Ubuntu from here.

1. It is safe. In the world of Ubuntu there aren't any viruses. If there is a bug, it will immediatly get fixed because Ubuntu is open-source, this means, the coding is available to everyone.
2. You can try it live. Just pop in the CD in the CD-ROM, restart your PC and test-drive Ubuntu without the need of installing anything.
3. Install Ubuntu within Windows. Afraid of partitioning? No problem, using Wubi you can install it like any other application in Windows. After this, restart your PC and you can dual-boot into Ubuntu.
4. It's free. All you need is an internet connection (necesarry to download Ubuntu) and a blank CD. Want the original CD? Go to shipit.ubuntu.com and get your free copy.
5. It's stable. Programs rarely crash.
6. It's open source. The code is available to everyone. This means, you can take part of the improvment.
7. Time. It will always move as it was just installed.

Decided to make the big move? Great! After downloading you copy of Ubuntu you can read how to install Ubuntu or read our Frequently Asked Questions or read the tips for newcomers.

  2. What about games? Can I use steam? will it work with my network printer? Will it have the drivers for my web cam? will it be able to sync files to my other machines running other OS'? Will I be able to install Office with the licence I own? Will I be able to power-use this OS without using the command line?

Even if I'm really a huge supporter of open source, I have too much money invested in windows only software to drop Windows (Steam, Office, etc.)

When Wine will be seamlessly integrated into Ubuntu and REAL games will be playable (not linux solitaire or whatever) I'll be the first to install. until then...

  3. You can not use Steam
    Your network printer will work
    Your webcam will work
You can view files from other partitions/os
You will not be able to install office, but you have openoffice.org, an application preinstalled in ubuntu that let's you edit/create .doc, .xml and other files
You will need to use command line, as it will give you more freedom

  4. You will not NEED to use command line but you will want to because it's sometimes much easier, just like you sometimes want to actually type in words in your word processor rather than find the letters in a menu and click them into the document :O

  6. You really need to mention WUBI.

This is the key to converting many new PCs that come with Vista.

I have introduced Ubuntu 8.10 and switched over 30 people full time because of WUBI over the past year.

Its a no-brainer way to help people from the disdain of Vista and avoid having to format and install XP, which is now almost 10 years old.

  7. I just switched to ubuntu. I went the WUBI route at first, as wewa recommends. After playing with it for a day or two, learning the basics of application life cycles and file structures, I found the terminal. I have limited programming experience, mostly web mark-up really, not even programming. I feel like a god in the terminal! sudo apt-get install ubuntu!!!

  8. Great! Welcome to the ubuntu world, you will see... terminal is one of the best thing around in Ubuntu. With the help of it, you will solve most of the problems in Ubuntu.

    Have a nice day!

  9. As for the post from:

Many windows programs can be installed when running Ubuntu. For a person who deals a lot with programming and open source solutions for corporations I found that for the most part many programs can works flawlessly running in Ubuntu.

Although to admin comment, I have Office 2007 working great with Ubuntu using wine 1.1.18. For games, WoW, one of the most popular games out there runs faster on Linux than XP, just check out WoW forums and have personally set this up on a variety of Linux distros:
    http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html;jsessionid=C03C4ED9C2D33BBC914DD92AC0EBE397?topicId=2720404457&sid=1

Steam will work although it is missing some features (not tested yet in 1.1.18) see:

I doubt that they will have a huge impact on your gaming style.

If you need to use some windows programs that do not work with Linux (CS4 apps have some problems) you can easily virtualize a windows desktop seamlessly into Linux using Virtual Box OSE. Also with improvements in 3d virtual acceleration, you soon will be able to play games directly in the virtualization. Virtual Box isn't the only program but is for the most recent release:
    http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads
or the use the terminal command:
    sudo apt-get install virtualbox-ose

For a video of windows seamlessly integrated into Ubuntu see:

I guess the main thing is that as with anything new you have to learn how to work it, this is the same for Linux. Although it may be frustrating at first you will eventually get the hang of it. As the community grows Linux with grow.

For now what I would recommend for people would are interested in trying Ubuntu is to download to image, burn to a cd and (while still booted into windows) install Ubuntu. Once you restart your computer you will have the option to boot into Ubuntu. For help:
