The Splash screen in 9.10 will be Plymouth. 9.04 will be the last distro to have USplash. Of course Ubuntu 9.10 will have a customized version of Plymouth so that it doesn't look like Fedora.
@BradleyRobb IMHO UbuntuStudio left the really nice aesthetic it had when it first released for waters of uncharted ugly...
I like the new login screen, the new wallpapers are *ok* but there's a lot of great stuff in the submissions page.
The new usplash makes me kvetch. I know that the progress bar in the bootscreen doesn't match any progress bar in almost any theme now, but this...? It's gross, especially when stretched for a widescreen. Thank goodness we're leaving for Plymouth in 9.10. That may be too long.
To upgrade your existing installation simply press Alt+F2 and type "update-manager -d" (of course, without the quotes). A window will pop out telling you a new release is available. Press upgrade and wait.
Jaunty will go Alpha 6, Beta, RC, then on to release. Once you have updated to Jaunty you eventually end up with the final release. There is a PPA for Plymouth Packages but it requires KMS. Some proprietary drivers don't offer that.
The Plymouth packages also need the 2.6.29 kernel. Unless you like building your own kernels then it might not be a good idea. I like the idea of 9.10 getting Plymouth. By then the proprietary nvidia and ATI blob drivers should have true KMS support and that would make Plymouth better. That might be until 2.6.30 or 2.6.31. 9.10 wil use either of those kernels. Plymouth works best with true KMS. KMS is Kernel mode settings. The current kernel in Jaunty is stable which is good. Just because something works for you doesn't mean it works for them. Hope this clarifies on Plymouth.
